My Income and Sources for April 2013

Total income for April 2013 = $438.69 (spoiler alert: May is over $1,000; post is coming soon!)

For the record, I have no reason to lie to you about any of the income I’m reporting, and the most underhanded, nasty, smarmy thing I’m going to do is give you my referral links so I can make a whopping dime or so off of each person who signs up to do what I’m doing!

The dollar amounts I show are what I actually RECEIVED in my hot little hand or PayPal account, not what I EARNED because things show up at different times and take different amounts of time to come around.

I do not count my eggs before they are in my PayPal account.

Fiverr. I made $0 here in April, only because I didn’t sign up until April 16^th. You’ll freak out when you see May’s numbers. The majority of my income is from proofreading in the wee hours of the morning when my kids sleep but I also have gigs for selling my ebooks cheap, writing blog posts, selling reprint articles and promoting things via my social media outlets. 

Bubblews. Signed up here on April 26 and received $0 by the end of April. May is looking hella good, though. 

Regional Parenting Magazine print and online articles and reprints: $340. Yeah, still working on the 5th edition of the ebook (see right sidebar for 4th edition) and someday plan to query the nationals but am too busy on Fiverr!

BlogHer. Just one sidebar ad here made me $3.30 in January, $5.49 in February plus I got paid for a tweeting program for $50. They have lots of rules to follow, like you can’t have ads from anyone else on your site and can’t even post blogger giveaway opps. I only stay with my abusive boyfriend BlogHer because sometimes he offers me chances to review cool things for $50 or to Tweet a few times about a product for $50 and then he sucks me right back in. I’m pretty sure he’s jealous of Bubblews, though. 

AdSense??? I put questions marks because what I earn is all theoretical here. It shows that I earn an amount but will I ever see it? So it looks like I earned $19.22 in April from several blogs combined, but … 

Tomoson.com. I don’t make any money here, but it’s fun to receive free stuff in the mail and just do a quick review. Then you can either keep, regift or sell what you got! 

Ebook sales from Payloadz.com were $39.90. I also sell the ebooks through Fiverr but count those in Fiverr income. 

Here are some I’m trying out:

PostLoop. Signing up and getting started is a PITA, but I hope to be able to report back some decent income from commenting in Forums. 

LikeNation. You know how you enter giveways and have to like and follow countless people? Well, if you have your own sites that need a’followin’, check this out. You like and follow and get “points” to do it. Then you can post what you want liked or followed and can use those points you earned. So you’re trading favors. 

Come back to see May’s numbers because you will flip your lid! (Hint, as of May 19 I’m already at $605). Great, now all my friends will be hitting me up for a loan. Haha!

Organizing My Writing Stuff with pictures!

I cant wait to hear your 2013 Writing Goals. Me? Well, I havent set any. Im focusing right now on organizing all my papers and ideas, written on all sorts of different things.

I bought a large plastic tub at Office Depot, and it holds hanging file folders. It also holds my ebook, which Ive printed and put in a binder. Ill be working on updating that soon, but in the meantime it is still my own best resource for getting published. I like the tub because I can tuck it away when Im not writing and drag it out when I actually get some time to hunker down and write. With a traveling, working-a-lot husband, that is not so often!

I Still Make Money Selling My Parenting and Family Reprints! Marketing is the Key

Nope, I didnt just WRITE the book on getting published in parenting and family magazines over and over again using the SAME article!

I am PROOF that it works because I do it and have been doing it for going on 10 years! I sent out my two Mothers Day offerings in March and have so far been accepted in 5 different magazines for a total of $170! Keep in mind here that these articles are FOUR YEARS OLD and they keep selling. I just have to market them!

How do you market an article?

You dont forget about it. You dont write it, sell it once and let it rot.

You say, "Hmmm, Im going to send out this Mothers Day piece I popped off in December to every magazine in Kerries ebook. And Im probably going to hear back from a few magazines. But then I have to put a reminder SOMEWHERE to also send it out AGAIN to all publications EXCEPT the ones who accepted it the first time (otherwise I am just rude and annoying) sometime around March for all those publications who DO NOT work 6 months in advance."

There are a lot of magazines who work 6 months out and have it all planned out. But if something INSANELY FABULOUS comes into their email box, they might bump something else or make more space.

There are also a lot of magazines who work LAST-MINUTE and you want to be their go-to writer, believe me. Its April 23 as I write this and most magazines are all put to bed, but just today I got another Mothers Day acceptance. I am happy to be the last-minute filler girl, and you should be also!

How can you do what I am doing? Just grab my print book (so you can mark it up and make changes, additions, deletions, highlights, etc.) and get going! Write me for the .csv file so you can more quickly get the emails in your system and get submitting! And dont forget you can send things previously published on your blog, on Huffington Post Parents, ANYWHERE that you did not sign a contract saying you wouldnt. If its your work, you can sell it again and again as long as you dont sign anything saying you cant shop it around for a year or something. I dont advise you do that! Heres the link!

My Rockin Income and Sources for May 2013

Total income for May 2013 = $1,313.94

Here were Aprils numbers. Quite a change, and all while I homeschool 5 kids and take on June Cleaverdom!

This all means: I do not count my eggs before they are in my PayPal account. Now, lets get started:

1. Fiverr. I received $763 here in May, only because I didn’t sign up until April 16^th. The majority of my income is from proofreading in the wee hours of the morning when my kids sleep, but I also have gigs for selling my ebooks cheap, writing blog posts, selling reprint articles and promoting things via my social media outlets. Ive disable the writing gigs and now focus on proofreading and am growing my Error Police Force so we can take on more word crimes as a unit. I received $120 on private proofreading projects.

2. Bubblews. Signed up here on April 26 and received $150.51 by the end of May.  

3. Regional Parenting Magazine print and online articles and reprints: $120. Yeah, still working on the 5th edition of the ebook (see right sidebar for 4th edition) and someday plan to query the nationals but am too busy on Fiverr!

4. BlogHer. Made about 5 more bucks for May, but have not received payouts yet. Added one ad and a TV dealy jobber to my main blog, plus they have me in another $50 tweeting program.

5. AdSense. HOLY FLIPPING CRAP, I got a check from them for $110.40 on May 28. Keep in mind thats for about 2 years of blogging! Still, I will take it and not complain!

6. Tomoson.com. I don’t make any money here, but it’s fun to receive free stuff in the mail and just do a quick review. Then you can either keep, regift or sell what you got!

7. PostLoop. Im going to send you here because I have a lot of information on this and it needed its own post. Bottom line: probably worth it and potentially $10/hour while you watch TV. I ended up receiving $5.08 from them very quickly after cashing out, as in the same day.

8. LikeNation. I have to push them again this month because Ive seen my followers increase, which is good for a lot of reasons; namely, the bigger my fan base, the more I can charge for social media stuff like on Fiverr and Sponsored Tweets (AND I look better to get stuff on Tomoson to review). You know how you enter giveways and have to like and follow countless people? Well, if you have your own sites that need a’followin’,check this out. You like and follow and get “points” to do it. Then you can post what you want liked or followed and can use those points you earned. So you’re trading favors.

9. SponsoredTweets. Ive been with them for probably 2 years and rarely get jobs. Earlier this year I got a bunch of tweeting jobs, then they dried up. I played with lowering and increasing my per-tweet rate, but I didnt get any more business. Im was sitting at $21.92 and there is a $2 fee for cashing out under $50, so I just went ahead and did it on May 28 to see how long it would take to receive it. Well, forget that ... I kept getting error messages. Ill try again.

10. I forgot to mention that I also do MyPoints and have for years. If you want to sign up under me you have to send me your email address ... they are dumb to not have a referral LINK! Anyway, Ive earned about 31,000 points there and 2,000 points is about a $10 gift card to all sorts of places (your choice). So Ive gotten a lot gift cards. You get points by clicking through on email, doing surveys, surfing the web and BUYING STUFF with COUPONS!
11. I briefly tried writing for a penny a word and did not love it, but I did get paid $30 for doing it.

12. Ebook sales from Payloadz.com were only $14.95 because I am too busy with other stuff to work on the ebook UPDATE. I also sell the ebooks through Fiverr but count those in Fiverr income. This post is holding me accountable to get the flippin ebook update done!

Why I Offer My Ebooks on KindleUnlimited for FREE

I love logging in to my Amazon Kindle KDP Select account and seeing a surprise! 408 pages read in my ebooks on Kindle Unlimited in one day after days of zero pages read. Theres something about Sundays ... I always see my numbers spike then. I love offering that option for those who don’t want to buy it and who pay $10 a month like I do to download 10 at a time for free for rent! We can do all kinds of research for books and articles for only $10 a month! We can download all the fiction we want, all the DIY we want.

Read one, return it, get another. Always have 10 at a time!

Theres something like a $12 million fund and the more KU pages read of my books, the bigger my monthly bonus. It’s like icing and another way to make money and I love it. Someone might not want to buy my book or clutter their Kindle with it forever but they want to borrow it and so I make that available.

I also love supporting other writers, knowing they are getting a bonus for me downloading and flipping through or devouring their books. I always try to leave a review before I return the book, unless it was too horrific then I try to not leave one of those 1-star reviews. I might instead track the author down personally and offer some suggestions for improving the book, especially if its nonfiction, since thats the genre I write in.

Im a big fan of Kindle Direct Publishing. I built an entire business around the platform!

Granted, there are dozens of downsides, problems and issues with KDP. But, Ive also watched Amazon fix and eliminate hundreds of problems or glitches within a few hours or days. Amazon deserves a lot of credit.

Old World print book publishing will probably survive. Most people love print books, including me.

But Old World publishers, and especially the Big Boys in NYC -- are mostly living off an old, overpriced system.

Digital and mobile publishing is the hot rising trend, not old world print publishing.

My Ideal Writing Day WorkingFromHome

Do you ever think about your ideal working or writing day from home? I also call it my Dream Writing Day.

My dream writing day would have more than 24 hours in it. Maybe like 50 hours.

I would not have to take breaks to eat or pee. My little kids would not need me to come sit with them on the steps while they pee because they are scared of monsters. They also would not need to eat. HA!

I would have unlimited energy.

I would have plenty of time for homeschooling my kids in a quality manner and to have fun with them outside of the house as well.

I would go for an hour walk, listening to helpful podcasts about writing and saving money.

I would have a clean email inbox with everything in its place and nothing in the inbox. As emails would come in, I would take care of them, print them for my planner or move them where they go.

I would finish my Tater Tot Casserole ebook update with improvements and also get it uploaded to CreateSpace for print because it is SOCLOSE to being done.

I would then rock out the 7th edition of my Make Money to Write About Your Kids because the 6th edition is about a year old and IT IS TIME FOR THE UPDATE.

I would then begin on a NEW PROJECT (one of about 10) that has been on my mind for a book.

I would write one post for each of my 75 blogs (okay, its not that many but I have a lot and I love them all and they each represent an aspect of who I am and what I can offer readers), especially this one, which is really taking off and is all about our finances!

I think a key for me is COMPLETING SOMETHING, anything. Instead of working 10 minutes here and there on a project, I have to force myself to complete ONE THING. And a problem I have is HYPERFOCUS. I get afraid to start on a project all-in because I neglect other things that need to be done when I get all into one project. I have trouble stopping once I start and often thats why I dont even start.

Fotolia is Rejecting my Vector for no Good Reason

Fotolia had been one of my best agency. I used to love it. It accepted everything I submitted and produced a decent sales all the time.

But recently, Fotolia has been rejecting my vectors... without giving me a good reason. I am really frustrated and annoyed. Below are the sample of rejected vectors. Bear in mind that these vectors had already been accepted by all other agencies and they are selling already.

And below is the rejection reason from Fotolia.

Fotolia: Photograph Declined - Technical Problems 

Hello leremy, 

We regret to inform you that photo 39961352 was not accepted. Photographs submitted to Fotolia must meet high technical standards.
The image contains one or more technical problems:

• Blurry or out of focus

• Over/Under exposure

• Framing problem

• Over or under saturated colors

• Problems with contrast

• Noise or Pixelation

• Quality of routing

• Interpolation problem

Looking at the rejection reason, one vector contributor can clearly understand that these reasons are standard reasons for declining a photograph, not a vector. Vectors will not have the problems mentioned above. What I am really questioning now is whether my reviewer is a qualified vector artist himself or merely a photographer who dont understand anything about vector.

Since Fotolia did not gave me a reason that make sense, I guess the problem could be having jagged edges in my vector when Fotolia requires us to submit a 15MP resolution JPEG for the vector. You know, when you save any artwork of that size, your artwork will have jagged edges because the DPI in our screen could not accommodate such a precision. This is actually a limitation. That could be the reason for rejection. Thus, I have resubmitted my vector and explained to them about the problem in the Note to Moderator column. What happen was, they rejected it again with the EXACT SAME reason like above. I was hoping that they could at least give me a clue on whats my problem was. This is utterly frustrating.

I then, wrote a message to Fotolia about all the problems mentioned above. Below is the message.

Fotolia keeps rejecting my vector work recently and the reviewers did not specific the problem. They only give me a general reply to the rejection which doesnt make sense at all. This is making me very frustrated.

Can you please explain in details what are the problem with these submission?

The main criteria for validation or rejection are: the quality of the image/video, the technical requirements, the similarity to existing Fotolia photographs and the images/videos sale potential. We know that it can be difficult to have an image or video rejected but please bear with us. You would be able to view your deleted files by going to: "My Files > Manage My Files > Show Deleted Files (green button located on the right side)". We encourage you to continue uploading your images and videos.

You see, up to this point, there is almost nothing I could do to get my artwork approved. These artworks had taken days to produce. It is not just about tracing photograph. It takes days and months to gather the resources from real objects and human model I photographed myself.

To conclude this, I will give up submitting to Fotolia for the time being, and hopefully there will be a change in the reviewer system one day later. Of course, this will not break my spirit to continue since all other agency still love my work.

Total income for June 2013 = $1,559.65

UPDATE: Here is March 2014s kick-ass income ... still going strong here! That post leads to all the other months! Keep at it!

Here were Aprils numbers, and then Mays numbers. Im really excited to be able to make this much from home while also homeschooling my kids. The money helps out so much with unexpected household expenses (root canals, leaky roofs, new brakes, broken car radiator, etc. that most people would have to put on a credit card or that would put them into bankruptcy eventually).

3. Private proofing job. $20.00.

4. Bubblews. $257.64. Just click on the word Bubblews and you can sign up using my referral link. I think I get two shiny dimes to rub together if you do that, but it will change YOUR life!

5. Regional Parenting Magazine articles, new and reprint: $226

6. General blogging for North Texas Kids and other sites. $147

3. Space City Publishing (several magazines in Texas) used Lemonade Stand Learning, inspired by watching my kids do lemonade stands one summer and all the cool things they learned doing so.

4. Bermuda Parent is using Lemonade Stand Learning, Bust Indoor Boredom, Birthday Traditions with Kids and Travel with Kids.

5. Cincinnati Parent is using Birthday Traditions, inspired by fun things I like to do with my own kids.

6. First Time Parent is an app magazine on your smartphone, and they used my piece on Double Diapering, about using both cloth AND paper diapers (not at the same time!).

7. Atlanta Parent used Pregnancy Sleep Solutions, a piece I wrote forever ago, and Lemonade Stand Learning. (Im glad I sent out that lemonade piece again this year!)

8. Baton Rouge Parents used The No-Gift Birthday Party, inspired by kids who dont want a gift but instead want to have a party at an animal shelter or do some other cool thing to give back instead of acquiring more stuff.

9. Toledo Area Parent News used Eating Organic on a Budget (also have never worked with Toledo Area Parent so this is a new one for me and Im so thrilled!)
