5 Sample Markets out of 285 from the Book Make Money to Write About Your Kids

This post over here will get you started. It tells about the 6th edition of my ebook and how the print edition is coming within a week or so! VERY EXCITING! You will carry the print version with you everywhere, highlighting pubs you get published in and sticky-noteing the pubs you want to pitch to!

I figured you might want a sample of the markets from the ebook/print book to get yourself all excited and psyched to start writing and sending old and new material to these markets. They want your stuff! They even want your witty parenting blog post that didnt get a lot of traffic but that you KNOW would do well in a magazine ... and you would make money as well! Heres your sample of just the first 5 markets in the book! Some are just a website and email address for now for submitting. Others are quite extensive with specific guidelines and pay information. Enjoy!

A FINE PARENT (online)
afineparent.com
sumitha@afineparent.com
Guidelines: Write for us about Our Current Topic, which can be found online. Submit detailed outline by approximately the 4thof each month. I will let you know if your outline is accepted on approximately the 6th. The first draft of the full article is due by approximately the 13th. Payment will be made within 24 hours of receiving the final draft. Payment per accepted article is $100 + links + a shot at the annual bonus. (NOTE: This page is updated on the 1st of each month with a new topic and submission dates. Please sign up for notifications.) A Fine Parent is an online community for parents who believe that Great Parents are Made, Not Born. We focus on one topic each month that can help us become better people and better parents. Each week on the blog I publish one in-depth article related to the monthly topic. Initially, I wrote all the articles for this blog myself. After sharing a few readers stories and guest posts however, I realized just how much we can all benefit from shared wisdom and diverse voices. Hence this call for you to write for us. If you are constantly working on becoming a better parent, if you have a few hard-earned nuggets of wisdom under your sleeve, if you see another parent and instantly connect, AND if you happen to be a writer as well … boy, have we been waiting for you!

What We Look for In the Articles We Publish:
·         the article MUST offer practical and actionable advice/tips
·         the article MUST contain personal stories and anecdotes that connect with the other parents in our community (blah list posts won’t cut it)
·         the article MUST be written in web-format (well-organized; skimmable; short paragraphs; lists and bullets when possible; custom illustrations when possible)
·         the article MUST include references to books, research or other authoritative references (you can even link to articles on your own blog as long as it is relevant and offers value)
·         the article MUST be original and not published anywhere else before
·         the article MUST contain the mandatory “2-minute action plan” (contemplation/reflection questions) and the “long-term action plan” (specific action to take over the next week) sections at the bottom of the article (see the bottom of any article for samples)
·         Most articles on the blog are in the 1,500-2,500 words range. I prefer to stick to that range, but will make exceptions on a case-by-case basis.
By submitting the article you agree that if your article is published, I will retain the rights to republish or reuse the material in the future, of course with due credit to you. If you’re not familiar with the blog, please spend some time there to get a feel for it first. You may even consider joining our community and just watching what gets posted for a bit before you start writing for us.

How to Submit
·         Send me an email with the article outline before the deadline. Include as many details as possible to help me make an informed decision (for instance, mention any background stories that you plan to tie in, a list of the practical tips that will be included, references that will be used, any books that will be mentioned etc.)
·         If you have published online before, please send me a few links so I can get a sense of your writing style.
·         If your outline is accepted, send the completed article as a word document before the deadline.
·         Include the keywords “Kick-ass Article for AFP” in ALL your email subject lines. (I get a LOT of mail, so this is extremely important to ensure that you receive a prompt response from me).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1.       I missed the deadline for this month, or this month’s topic does not resonate with me. Do you by any chance have a list of the future topics?
Yes, sort of. A Fine Parent has been evolving into a true community blog and the topics we cover now are picked by our readers through a survey. A link to the response from our latest survey is online, and that should give you an idea of what we will cover next.
2.       How do you notify me about the outline?
I do my best to notify everyone of (a) the receipt of the outline and (b) the final decision. It will help immensely if you include the keywords “Kick-ass Article for AFP” in ALL your email subject lines. I receive a lot of mails and those words are part of an email filter that marks your mails as important so I can respond in a timely manner.
3.       What kind of articles are more likely to get selected?
We’ve been doing this for a few months now, and a pattern is beginning to emerge. The articles that I end up publishing are the ones where I see that you personally relate to the topic you’ve chosen to write about and hence will be able to connect more authentically and genuinely with the reader. For instance, if you are writing about how to teach kids to be compassionate, then either you’ve had to deal with your child acting unexpectedly mean, or your child has been a victim of bullying. Also, the “lessons learned”/ ”what I’m trying to do”/ ”what is working for me now” parts of your article tend to be much more real and not a riff off of a few Google search results. Think of it … You are a parent too. Which one of these would you rather read—a preachy list of things of what you must do in any given situation, or a real-life account of what another parent did in a very similar situation, their thought process, the obstacles they came up against and how they triumphed?
4.       Can I submit more than one outline?
No. Please submit only one outline per month. See #3 above. I’d rather that the focus be on quality than on quantity, and you send me that one article about the topic that most resonates with you.
If you have not written for us before or if you’ve not been a member of our community for long, please use the suggestions below to send your first outline. Also, please be sure to pick something you have personal experience with—anecdotes, unique perspectives and lessons learnt are highly valued in our community (hashed up lists compiled using Google search generally don’t make the cut). If you can bring professional advice from your day job and apply it in a clever and practical way to this month’s topic, please do—these are some of the most highly prized articles we seek out!
Approximate pay: $100 per article via PayPal with the chance for a $200 bonus at the end of the year if your piece is the most popular.

Putting My Book to Work Where Im Published in July 2015 ParentingMagazineWriting

I like to let you know where Im published each month not to brag, but to let you know you can also be doing it. To let you know that if you dont quit and you keep going, you will succeed! Check out my #30Submissions30Days challenge here! And of course you can do exactly what Im doing if you buy my book here on Amazon! This month I had 11 articles in 10 publications and made a total of $345. I would say thats a nice little residual income on pieces I had written months to years ago that still sell from month to month while I have time to focus on writing brand new pieces! Give it a try!

1. After pitching for years to Colorado Parent, they picked up my Slumber Party Dos and Donts and I could not be more excited!

2. Okanagan Child is a publication that I had also never been in, so I am so excited to be in their Summer 2015 issue with my Good Grandparent Guide!

3. Boom! published my Good Grandparent Guide as well

4. Texarkana Parent is a new publication for me to be in and they used TWO of my pieces: Lemonade Stand Learning and what I called When Your Childs Pet Dies.

5. Birmingham Parent used Allowance Conundrum.

6. About Families published Surviving the First Year of Motherhood

7. Neapolitan Family used Birthday Traditions

8. Augusta Family published Kids and Activities: Seek Balance

9. Cincinnati Parent used Birthday Traditions

Book Rec Around the Writers Block

If I can ever get caught up on all my Fiverr proofreading/writing jobs I might get a chance to read Around the Writers Block: Using brain science to solve writers resistance by Rosanne Bane.

Instead of having to pay the library more fines for keeping the book so long, Im just going to buy the dang thing! Heres where to get it on Amazon, along with some reviews!

Currently my struggle is procrastination. I mean, I even signed up to do proofreading to avoid querying national magazines, but I got honest with myself and figured out that its because I am afraid to have a Big Editor Boss in New York City telling me I have to edit a $1.50/word article within HOURS when I have something planned with my kids. Fiverr allows me to set my own schedule, and I suppose Im afraid to not be my own Big Editor Boss.

What are your writing challenges?

250 Parenting Magazines in One Book Regional and National and Online

I compiled an ebook in 2009 about how to get published in regional parenting magazines. I compiled dozens and dozens of magazines information in one spot to help myself with the submissions process. I had moderate success and wanted to organize all the magazines because I was striving for being published in even more of them and making money at it as well. So to the basic writers guidelines and contact info for the magazines I added practical information like how to submit to them and tips and tricks and it turned into a large ebook that has been compared to Writers Market (only Writers Market has a handful of parenting magazines and I have over 200).

I have updated this ebook every year and now I have over 150 publishing credits under my belt (list is here so you can check it out) and am still writing. Its a great business to be in because I can take a long break to do proofreading projects or write ebooks or work on my direct sales businesses and then always come back to it. Even without writing any new pieces for many months, my reprints keep selling. Its nice to get a check for $70 when you just got an unexpected $70 bill in the mail from someone else!

True story: One day a blogger content group showed up on my Facebook newsfeed and it was a writer offering all these parenting pieces for $15 to bloggers but only one person could have each piece. I immediately wrote her and asked if she knew that she could sell those same pieces for $35 and sell them over and over again? She was skeptical so I sent her the table version of my ebook. She was in love and bought the book. I contacted a photographer as well and the same thing happened.

So I figured what would it hurt to offer you the list for free? If you love it and want the full guidelines in the 256-page ebook plus all the insider info from someone who has been doing this for going on 10 years, youll get the ebook, print it out and start submitting to magazines! If not, you still have the list and good luck to you! (heres the link to the ebook in case you want to do that thing Amazon lets you do and check out a sample of it first).

Its also in print now and Im working on the 7th edition, to come out this spring!

A Game of Thrones By George R.R. Martin

George R.R. Martin started with of A Song of Ice and Fire with the first novel entitled A Game of Thrones. This is first book of 7-volume series. First published in 1996. A television series adaptation had also been made and broadcast ed by HBO, since 2011. This novel is particularly unique in its story development since it presents various points of view and plot-lines, namely the noble houses of Westeros, the Wall, and the Targaryen plot-line. All in all, this book—or the whole series in that matter—conveys a genuine masterpiece of modern epic fantasy. Putting My Book to Work Where Im Published in June 2015 ParentingMagazineWriting

I like to let you know where Im published each month not to brag, but to let you know you can also be doing it. To let you know that if you dont quit and you keep going, you will succeed! Check out my #30Submissions30Days challenge here! And of course you can do exactly what Im doing if you buy my book here on Amazon!

1. After pitching for years to Birmingham Parent, they picked up my 8 Tips for Saving on Birthday Gifts for June 2015 and I could not be more excited!

2. About Families used my Birthday Party Excess piece, inspired by all the over-the-top, expensive parties that go down these days when I am doing good just to have a simple, at-home party for each of my own 5 kids!

3. Space City Publishing (several magazines in Texas) used Lemonade Stand Learning, inspired by watching my kids do lemonade stands one summer and all the cool things they learned doing so.

4. Bermuda Parent is using Lemonade Stand Learning, Bust Indoor Boredom, Birthday Traditions with Kids and Travel with Kids.

5. Cincinnati Parent is using Birthday Traditions, inspired by fun things I like to do with my own kids.

6. First Time Parent is an app magazine on your smartphone, and they used my piece on Double Diapering, about using both cloth AND paper diapers (not at the same time!).

7. Atlanta Parent used Pregnancy Sleep Solutions, a piece I wrote forever ago, and Lemonade Stand Learning. (Im glad I sent out that lemonade piece again this year!)

8. Baton Rouge Parents used The No-Gift Birthday Party, inspired by kids who dont want a gift but instead want to have a party at an animal shelter or do some other cool thing to give back instead of acquiring more stuff.

9. Toledo Area Parent News used Eating Organic on a Budget (also have never worked with Toledo Area Parent so this is a new one for me and Im so thrilled!)

Parenting Publications of America Site vs Make Money to Write About Your Kids Book

DING DING.

In this corner you have the Parenting Publications of America site.

In this corner you have the underdog:  Kerrie McLoughlin and her ebook Make Money to Write About Your Kids.

Lets see who wins.

If you want to save your money on my ebook, go ahead and spend hours (like I did three years ago) grabbing information from the PPA website.

But realize that that site only has HALF the markets my ebook has and NO bonus national, online and international markets.

And it doesn’t put the email addresses into a nice table.

And it doesn’t share any pay information or writer’s guidelines or editorial calendars or writing tips.

AND it wants $40 for 12 months of access.

So if you go with Kerrie in this fight, YOU win!

Updated version available February 16, 2015 for $8.99 with a print version option on the way soon after in case you like to have a paper copy to mark up like I do. I like to highlight publications I have had my work published in and make notes about pay and any changes that occur throughout the year.

Book Review Gigs for Clients on Fiverr

*Im not going to get into with you if this is ethical or not. It is happening and that is all. As long as someone is not providing you with review text and you are giving your own honest review, I dont see a problem with this. You are being paid for your TIME, not for a 5-star review. I personally always feel smarmy asking for a review on any of my own ebooks for free ... someone is spending their time to check out my book and I feel like they should be compensated.

Okay, that being said, there are a lot of companies and authors looking for book reviews. Product reviews are a different animal and I would not do one of those unless provided with the product.

Heres my personal experience with doing book reviews for Fiverr clients: It was too busy and I could not keep up! Then someone reported me or something and I got shut down. Fiverr shut down my book review gig and wont let me even put REVIEW in any of my gigs anymore. Im not sure how this highly successful Fiverr seller has gotten away with it for years but see how she words her gigs. Remember that when you are first starting on Fiverr you cant offer the EXTRAS like she is doing ... I believe you can do that after about 30 days. Then its nice to be able to charge an extra 2 gigs for 24-hour turnaround if you are able.

For now you can charge one gig for the review and another gig for any ebook priced up to $4 and a third gig for any ebook priced up to $8 (Fiverr takes 20% of your sales so keep in mind you get $4 per paid gig and not $5). You keep any overage. You simply purchase the ebook on Amazon, peruse it, speed read, whatever, and give a review. If there are ever any problems with getting paid from a buyer, simply go back to Amazon and request a refund for your ebook purchase.

The seller I referenced above, plus all the others doing this, must be speed readers or have a lot of time on their hands as shut-ins or something???? I cant figure it out and let me know if you can! I wish you success at whatever you try on Fiverr!

*Do not give 24-hour service for free and do not pre-write a review until you have been paid, no matter how big a hurry you are in. There are people/buyers on Fiverr who are looking for free work and will threaten to give you bad feedback if you dont cancel their order and give it to them for free. Trust your instincts on jobs like this.

Bloggers Writers! My Book is on Free Days!!!! ArticleReprints ResidualIncome

**If you are coming to this post after November 28th, 2015, keep in mind you can still get this book FREE on Kindle Unlimited. You pay about $9.99 per month to download 10 books at a time that are enrolled in the KU program. You can turn one in and get another. Turn them all in and get 10 more. Please remember authors rely on your reviews so other readers know what to expect ... your thoughtful review really makes a difference and means a lot to me!

Its time for another 5-day FREEEBOOK (free + ebook = freeebook) EXTRAVAGANZA!

This time its "Make Money to Write About Your Kids: Get Published in Regional, National & Online Parenting & Family Magazines" that I have put up to bat. Five whole days you can download it onto your Kindle reader or laptop or other device FREE! I used to not have a Kindle but still got Kindle books because I utilized Amazons Cloud Drive. I love working with a company that is so accommodating!

Okay, so I wrote this book back in 2009 when I was pregnant with my 5th child, Samuel. I had been writing for regional parenting magazines for a few years and had been compiling all the magazine information I could find so I could submit all over the country and world. One day I thought, "Huh, so I have all this great information and I should share it! All the magazines, editors, email addresses, cities and states and writers guidelines and pay information because HOW GREAT WOULD THAT BE IF IT WERE A RESOURCE AVAILABLE TO OTHER WRITERS?!"

I mean, I would have bought it back then. Now its in the 6th edition and Im working on the 7th. Its truly like a Writers Digest Writers Market for the parenting and family category. The Writers Market annually only has a handful of markets for this niche. I have over 250. With details. And an at-a-glance table at the back. If you like a print book, you can get it that way too! What a great gift for the writer on your holiday list!

I have used this resource to get published in 155 magazines so far. You can find that list here!

*Please keep in mind I updated this back in February so some magazines have folded and I have found new ones as well. I will update all of this in the next edition and please let me know if theres anything else youd like to see!

Happy reading!
